Older Driver Assessment

When a driver reaches 85 years of age they are required to pass a practical driving assessment every second year to retain an unrestricted drivers licence. If they no longer require an unrestricted drivers licence they can opt for a modified licence without the need for a practical driving assessment.

If a driver needs to have a practical assessment they can choose one of the options below:

OPTIONS

  • Older Driver Assessment - This assessment can be undertaken in place of the RMS driving test. The assessment can be conducted by Barnes Driver Training (which is RMS accredited). The assessment begins from the home address or any other location convenient and we can provide a vehicle or you can use your own vehicle.
  • RMS Driving Test - Conducted from a RMS motor registry by the RMS staff. There is no training or feedback provided by the RMS, it is simply a driving test.

Modified Licence - For those with competent driving skills but not wishing to drive in challenging situations, the RMS can issue a modified licence which still allows the person to continue driving under some circumstances. For example, a modified licence can allow the licence holder to drive within a certain distance from their home or only at certain times of the day.
